Judges Select 143 Finalists for the Esteemed PRSA 2012 Silver Anvil Award

PRSA Silver Anvil Awards Evening to Be Held June 7 in Manhattan
NEW YORK (April 6, 2012) — The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) announced today that 143 finalists for the prestigious Silver Anvil Award were selected out of a 923 entries. Finalists will receive a Silver Anvil or Award of Excellence at the PRSA 2012 Silver Anvil Awards Ceremony, which takes place June 7 at the Equitable Tower in New York City.
In a year that saw the highest amount of entries ever submitted to the Silver Anvil Awards competition, several agencies stood out with finalists in multiple categories. Ketchum, Edelman, Weber Shandwick, Fleishman-Hillard, Exponent PR, MSLGroup, Padilla Speer Beardsley and Carmichael Lynch Spong each were finalists in a minimum of four or more categories.
“Every year, we see entries that adapt to the rapidly changing nature of communication delivery systems, while producing outstanding results in terms of attitude or awareness change,” said James J. Roop, APR, Fellow PRSA, 2012 PRSA Honors and Awards Committee chair and president of Cleveland-based Roop & Co. “These programs have successfully addressed issues with exceptional professional skill, creativity and resourcefulness while nimbly working their way through rapid-fire changes in the communication landscape to deliver the industry’s ‘best practices’ in research, planning and creative implementation.”
Several entries are finalists in multiple categories. IBM leads the way with six finalist entries — five alone for their “IBM at 100” campaign, which was conceived to define its place in the past and present in ways that reinforced its brand as an innovator shaping the future. Other companies with multiple finalist entries include:
  • Consejo Regulador de la Denominacion de Origen for “Vibrant Rioja.”
  • Diageo for “Sterling Vineyards Opens the Wine, Searches for the Ultimate Host and Uncorks Success.”
  • DoubleTree by Hilton Hotels for “Cookie CAREavan Across America.”
  • Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce for “The Campaign to Save Low Fares: Protecting Airline Competition.”
  • JetBlue Airways for “JetBlue’s Flight Plan for the Future: Connecting with the Cockpit to Preserve the Direct Relationship with Pilots.”
  • Minnesota Pork Board and Minnesota Pork Producers for “Oink Outings: A Passion for Pork from Farm to Fork.”
A panel of 147 senior practitioners from across the United States served as judges, selecting the Silver Anvil and Award of Excellence winners. This year’s Silver Anvil Awards Ceremony will end with the presentation of top honors spanning all categories — the Best of Silver Anvil Award and the Public Relations Professional of the Year Award.
The Best of Silver Anvil Award will be presented to the winning program voted “best of the best,” while the Public Relations Professional of the Year Award will be presented to the individual whose contributions to the program — or to the profession — stand out as outstanding examples of the best in public relations in 2011.
The Silver Anvil Awards program has grown in scope and stature since its inception in 1946, and awards are now given in 59 categories and subcategories. In the 60-plus-year history of the Silver Anvils, many organizations have been recognized, including solo practitioners, agencies of all sizes, large and small businesses, top corporations, nonprofits, associations and government agencies.
